Is Lip Augmentation The Key to More “Kissable” Lips?

Full, voluptuous lips have long been a sign of beauty. Lines in the upper lip are associated with aging, but lips themselves speak volumes!

As we age, less collagen is manufactured, and that loss can cause lips to thin. To compound matters, wind and sun exposure cause us to lose the oil and water barrier that keeps our lips hydrated. Lips require more moisturizing and conditioning as we age. Moisturizers with jojoba oil are particularly beneficial. However, restoring volume to regain that lush look to the lips requires injection of a filler.

Is Kysse the Key to “Kissable” Lips?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Restylane Kysse for lip augmentation. Kysse is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, but has been formulated in a way that allows it to be more flexible and longer lasting (up to a year according to studies). It is specifically designed for use in lip augmentation and to correct the upper lip wrinkle lines.

The makers of Kysse tout that treatment makes lips more “kissable”. They point to clinical studies reported that 98% of patients were satisfied with the “kiss-ability” of their lips following treatment. Ninety per cent of partners were satisfied with the appearance of their partners lips after treatment, and 96% of patients felt that their lips look natural following treatment.

How Lip Augmentation Can Help You

Lip augmentation is an office procedure and takes approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on the patient. Topical creams and gels are used to anesthetize both the outside and inside of the lips. After lips are “numb”, a small amount of anesthetic is injected into the back mucosal side of the lip to minimize any swelling and bruising and virtually eliminate any discomfort associated with placement of the filler. Following the injections, a special tape dressing and cold compresses are applied to the lips for 2 hours. It is recommended the patient stay on a soft diet and avoid excessive talking for the remainder of the day. Swelling can vary greatly between individuals, but most patients find they look good 1-2 days following treatment.

Lip augmentation can result in impressive results, but unfortunately, they are not permanent.
