The Key to Selecting a Cosmetic Surgeon: 4 Key Factors to Consider

When it comes to selecting a cosmetic surgeon, the process can be overwhelming. These days there are so many options and so much advice on social media. How do you cut through the noise and determine which doctor is right for you? In this post, we will examine the aspects you should use when evaluating who you want to perform your cosmetic surgery procedure.

1) Background

When selecting a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. William H. Beeson recommends examining the surgeon’s education, training and current competence. The latter can be judged in some manner by looking at the organizations that the individual participates in. If they are a frequent lecturer at meetings, or if they teach at a medical school, it is a good sign. Most doctors will have their CV posted online (For example, Dr. Beeson’s CV can be viewed if you click here).

2) Hospital Procedures

Dr. Beeson also recommends, when selecting a cosmetic surgeon, checking to see if the surgeon you are interested in has performed your desired procedure at a hospital. If they have, it means that a committee has reviewed the credentials of the doctor, and believes they are qualified to perform the procedure. These hospital committees are usually more intense about evaluation than a typical surgery center, so the approval is a sign that you are in good hands.

3) Who Does the Procedure?

When selecting a cosmetic surgeon, it is important to remember than not every doctor performs their own surgery procedures. Some doctors have assistant surgeons or fellows perform portions of the surgery. Fortunately, that is not the case at Beeson Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Beeson personally does the entire procedure. He believes that the patient is paying for the doctor’s experience and expertise. They should be having THAT person performing; not an understudy.

4) Compare Options

Compile a short list of surgeons in your area that you want to meet with personally. Use your first meeting with them as an evaluation to determine if you two have good chemistry. Don’t feel pressured to make a decision right away, make sure that analyzed all of your options before making a final decision on who you want to perform your surgery.
